Nefertiti Altan
Nefertiti is an afro-mestiza Spanish and Portuguese language interpreter, educator, facilitator, project coordinator, production manager, somatic movement instructor and performance artist with over 15 years of experience working with organizations, artists and social movements in the US, Brazil, México, Venezuela, Colombia, Guatemala and Germany on projects and initiatives at the intersection of racial, gender, environmental, health and migrant justice, indigenous, women’s and human rights, as well as Black and Indigenous futurisms.
The daughter of Guatemalan migrants born and raised in the unceded territories of the Ramaytush Ohlone (San Francisco Peninsula), she centers cultural responsiveness, embodied awareness and Freire’s pedagogy of the oppressed in her work as a language interpreter, facilitator, educator/trainer, project coordinator and production manager. Some of the organizations she has worked with in these capacities include the Indigenous Environmental Network, Taproot Earth, Grassroots Global Justice, The School of Unity and Liberation, Health Initiatives for Youth, The California Domestic Workers Coalition, The Goethe Institute, the 2018 World Social Forum, Mujer U’wa, New York Live Arts and The Festival of Latin American Contemporary Choreographers.
She received her BA in Anthropology and Community Studies from the University of California, Santa Cruz, a technical degree in dance from the Bahia State Cultural Foundation in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil and an MFA in Dance from Saint Mary’s College of California. She is excited to be joining Radiate Bay Area as a worker-owner to strengthen her capacity in cooperative structures and the greater solidarity economy movement.
